10.2 Megapixel Back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS Image Sensor

The DSC-TX7 features a 10.2 megapixel "Exmor R" CMOS image sensor that brings out the full resolving power of the camera's Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens to deliver extremely fast speed, high resolution, and stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain. In addition, the combined "Exmor R" CMOS sensor and BIONZ image processor delivers extremely fast 10fps, Anti Motion Blur, Hand-held Twilight and 1080i movie modes9..

Carl Zeiss® ario-Tessar® Lens with 25mm equivalent wide 4x Optical Zoom

The high-performance Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® 4x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for video recording as well as for outdoor, sports, and travel photos, and Close Focus shoots close-ups up to just under 1/2 " from the subject. A wide angle of 25mm equivalent wide-angle lens allows you to take wider shots of the scene or group in crowded spaces.

3.5" Xtra Fine LCD touch screen display1 w/TruBlack technology

A large 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD touch screen display1 w/TruBlack technology (921K pixels), the largest of Sony's Cyber-shot DSC line makes it easy for viewing and sharing images with simple and fun touch screen operation. With its Ultra AR film coating, which reduces reflections and increases contrast and brightness, viewing images on the LCD even in bright light is possible.

Easy Touch Screen Interaction

The DSC-TX7 offers intuitive functions to the multi-purpose touch screen, such as the ability to select the focus point with a simple touch, scroll through images by sliding your finger across the screen and one-touch access to the MENU. The display also features improved readability with list view and index view.

Anti-Motion Blur Mode

Capture cleaner and sharper images in low light for non landscape shots. When set in Anti-motion Blur Mode, the DSC-TX7 captures six images in a fraction of a second with higher shouter speed and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and eliminate subject blur, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.

Handheld Twilight

Capture cleaner and sharper night shots without using a tripod. When set to Handheld Twilight Mode, the DSC-TX7 captures six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise. With these modes, you can capture images in low light, without flash, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode

Capture expansive landscapes with Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode. Press shutter and sweep and the camera does the rest, continuously, shooting images and in one second stitching them together. This model even detects faces and moving subjects to stitch intelligently different widths to avoid subject distortion.

Backlight Correction HDR

Shooting high-contrast scenes can often lead to washed out backgrounds and/or details lost in shadow. Backlight Correction HDR helps correct for this by taking two pictures at different exposure settings and processing the best elements of both into a single image for more natural looking shots.

High speed shooting

The DSC-TX7 can capture full 10.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 frames per second, helping to ensure that you capture the decisive moment such as the soccer ball flying into the goal. In addition, the DSC-TX7 employs a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.

1080i AVCHD Movie Mode9

Record movies in 1080i AVCHD high definition at 60i9. The AVCHD format captures a high degree of detail and smooth movement, and when footage is burned to disc, can be played back on Blu-ray Disc players, Sony® PlayStation®3 systems and compatible PCs and HDTVs7 The convenience Movie start/stop icon makes it easy to access this mode via touch screen.

HDMI Output

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as a compatible camcorder, Blu-ray Disc player, a personal computer, a video game console, or an AV receiver to a compatible digital audio device and/or video monitor such as a digital television (DTV).

DVDirect® DVD recorder Compatible

With AVCHD capabilities the TX7 is compatible with the DVDirect® DVD recorder, allowing automatic playback of high definition footage. Simply insert your Memory Stick® media into the DVDirect® DVD recorder and enjoy your movies shot in high definition. (Recorder and media sold separately).

720p MP4 HD Movie Mode3

In 720p MP4 movie mode the camera shoots 1280 x 720 high definition movies at 30 fps, which is the format when working with a PC. Users will create high quality movies with full use of optical zoom in their Cyber-shot®DSCs in files small enough to transfer to compatible PC or Mac®. Self-Portrait Timer

Self-Portrait Timer helps take the guesswork out of self portraits by utilizing Face Detection technology to recognize when your face enters the frame. Once the camera detects your face, it triggers a 2-second timer, and then snaps a picture.

TransferJet technology

TransferJet technology, developed by Sony® and advanced and promoted by consortium of 18 other companies, allows you to transfer up to ten files between two TransferJet enabled devices just by touching them together, without the hassle of hunting for cables or the complication of pairing.11.

By incorporating advanced features such as Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, iAuto mode lets you take advantage of the latest Sony® Cyber-shot® technology without leaving auto mode. Whether you're shooting landscapes, capturing a beautiful flower, or taking pictures at an in-door birthday party or wedding shower, iAuto mode will optimize your camera's settings to help ensure you come away with a great shot.

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects nine different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Close Focus. iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

I have owned many digital cameras for 12+ years. Even though I have tried Casio, Olympus, and others; I always came back to Canon because the seemed to have the best image quality and latest technology. Previously, some Sony Cyber-shot digital cameras were nice, but not always the best image quality. With Sony's 2010 digital cameras, they have taken the lead (sorry Canon). A lot of research has shown this model (and the HX5V) to be at the top of the list for Digital Point and Shoot.

This is my second point and shoot Sony camera. The picture quality on this new TX7 is remarkably clear. I think what you will find with this camera that is leaps and bounds ahead of any other pocket size camera, like other reviews have mentioned, is the ability to capture extremely clear images in such low light without a flash. Most picture settings where you assume would be dark and unusable come out just like as if you had used a flash. The 1080 HD videos are also amazing, as is the panorama setting which is something you will find yourself using over and over again like an itch that you want to scratch in the best possible sense. I love this camera and can't wait to get the underwater housing for it so I can take underwater panorama pictures which has me jumping for joy in anticipation of the incredible images. I highly recommend this camera if you are looking for an amazing camera that has features you won't find on other top of the line digital cameras.

I bought a dsc-w220 and I wasnt keen on it. The little movement cause blur everywhere. I wasnt sure if I should go with another sony but after reading alot of reviews I decided to give it a shot. Yes the price is a little high but I used my sony reward points. The camera is nice in design.Small! Now the picture quality is what can kill a camera. Not this one. I was surprised at how great the pictures looked. From low light with the back lit hdr to the mutliple pictures it takes and combines to creat an image were all great! Low to bright lights this camera really won me over. Im glad I got this before I went on vacation! The only downside for me is the slide is tough to slide down the no grip or ridges, but over time that could easily loosen up. The battery is short. You only get a short time with the battery.

Just wanted to emphasize that almost all limitations of the flash can be easily resolved using (1) hand-held twilight mode (2) EV scale and/or (3) ISO choices. If you choose SD media, I suggest SDHC Class 6 or 10. This model is a milestone achievement. All time reading the 168 page Handbook will be very informative and well-spent.

Absolutely Fantastic Camera, a little pricey

Let me start by saying I have a Canon XS DSLR which I love, so my comparison to photos to that is probably very biased. The DSC-TX7 is an absolutely fantastic looking camera. No one has a camera this streamlined and small. AND THAT is exactly why I bought it. I was really hoping that the photos would turn out little bit better (the photos are still fantastic) but again, I was comparing to a DLSR, which really is no comparison. The lens in the TX7 is non-telescoping so you don't get as good of a photo as a telescoping lens or a DSLR, but there is no trading the sleek-ness of this camera. I can easily fit in my purse or pocket, or a jacket pocket. For snapshots it's perfect, and the touch screen makes it SOOOO easy to use. Matter-a-fact it has an "easy mode" which if you don't feel like thinking, or if you need to hand it to someone to take a picture of you, it makes it dummy-proof. The 2nd best thing (next to it's size) is the panoramic mode. That feature is super-sweet and getting lots in a photo it's a great feature. Imagine being able to shoot a whole room full of people and get everyone in the shot! The auto-focus or the way you can choose where to focus is pretty cool, and easy to maneuver. The HD video and the stereo mic is nice if you intend to watch directly to TV, but keep in mind the 1080i HD video takes up a lot of memory, so be sure to by a big memory card or SD card (yes, a sony camera that takes SD!). It's now March 2010, and i contemplated getting the all-weather, shock-proof DSC-TX5 that is supposed to come out in April 2010 for $350, BUT... it's seems to be the TX1 in an all-weather body. The TX1 is great, but the main differences between the TX1/TX5 and the TX7 seem to be the mono mic, the 720P HD vs 1080 HD, and the 3.0 (TX1/TX5) in touch screen vs 3.5 (TX7) in touch screen. Decide if you need an all weather body, and if you don't I would go for the TX7. The technology is newer, and it won't disappoint. Every day, I find a new feature that's pretty awesome. Oh, one last thing, the Silver color is really more like a gunmetal gray, and is actually nicer than I thought. Invest in a small microfiber/eyeglass cleaning cloth to keep handy, the touch screen gets really finger-printy, but it wipes easily. I wish there was a 4.5 star rating for this camera, because I would take a little off because of the price. $400 is the top of the market, there are a few other cameras that come close like the Nikon S70 for $300 or the Samsung TL225 Dual view for $350 , BUT.. it was a trade off for having such a sleek camera with the Panoramic mode. You definitely get what you pay for, because this camera is really is feature packed. I have been using it for a couple weeks, and I love it.

This camera takes amazing photos. its dummy proof when you put it in easy mode. well worth the money. I have professional looking photos now thanks to this camera. i would recommend purchasing another battery if you are going to take a lot of photos and using it all day and especially if you want to review the pics you have taken throughout the day. i also took a full HD movie inside a bar and it turned out pretty good considering the low light.

    excellent multi-use camera

This is my third Cyber shot. I started with the T1, then had the T100. Bought this one because I needed something that could do both Video and stills for my honeymoon. I have a Nikon D80 that I will also use, but decided not to upgrade to one of the DSLRs with HD video because the technology is just not there yet and I didn't want to buy a big Video camera and have to carry both. I was open to any camera brand and size, but based on the features and 1080i video (not 1080p yet), I decided on the TX7. My first impression is that the TX7 is an amazing camera. I have been playing with it for about 24 hours, so I have some experience at both night and daytime. I am using a 16gb class 6 SD card. Yeah...no more proprietary memory stick (Thanks Sony) - but it also accepts memory stick. I can swap the card between my Nikon D80 and this TX7. Movie Shooting: For this size camera, I am very pleased with the HD movie quality. Movie shooting in poor light shows a bit of noise. I put the camera in the dock and plugged in the HDMI cable directly to my 40" LED TV...this is where you see the true details and imperfections of the video - it always looks good in playback on the camera screen. However, again, the video is amazing for the size camera - the sound is pretty good also! I am perfectly happy with the quality of it to record my upcoming honeymoon memories. Stills: For the stills, some of the new features are really amazing. The panorama mode is simply amazing. It isn't like the other cameras where you have to take multiple pictures and match up the previous one. All you do is sweep the view while holding down the button, like you are taking a video, and it creates a perfect panoramic image. The other nice additions are the HDR and twilight mode where it takes multiple images to give you one good picture. Menus: I have been against touch screens for a while mainly because they weren't that good. I finally got an iPhone, and that set the standard for me. The TX7 touch screen is very good. I find navigating the menus (once you play with it for an hour) to be very intuitive. I feel at this point I know where everything is. You can also customize some of the layout which is nice. One of the negative things, which is purely a software thing, is some of the iPhone like sliding features. You can slide the menu in and out of view as well as slide through images. However, if you slide too slow or too fast, it will instead zoom in on an image or just not work. A little work needed here, but manageable, as using the slide features isn't the only way of sliding through the images or bringing up the menu. What's in the box: The dock for the TX7 is nice, however doesn't come with a power adapter. My old T100 did come with one which was nice, however, I found that the power adapter from my old T100 seems to work with the TX7 dock. Otherwise, you must remove the battery (which weighs about 1/2 my old one on the T100) and use the compact plug-in charger. Image quality: I did a test of taking the same picture out on my deck using the Nikon D80 with 18-200vr lens, Sony DSC-T100, and the Sony DSC-TX7. Taking the same picture with all zoomed out, the quality of close-ups on the same object in the picture on the D80 and T100 were better. However, that is because of the super wide zoomed out angle of the DSC-TX7. Zoomed out the DSC-TX7 had so much more picture. More of what I saw with my own eyes. This is really great. But the downside of this, is that it makes the 4x optical zoom less of a true 4x. My T100 had a 5x optical zoom, but at 4x is still greater than the TX7 at 4x. but I didn't buy this camera for zooms. I have the D80 for that. Zooming in the TX7 to 1.3-1.4x matches the other cameras at 1x. When compared using this, the quality was equal if not better than both the D80 and the T100. Overall, it is perfect for what I will use it for. Ergonomics: I have just two complaints about this camera so far. First, like my previous two Sony Cybershoots, the lens is opened by sliding down the front cover. The previous two cameras were very easy to slide down. The TX7 is much more difficult to slide down. It is very low profile, and you have to use friction or a fingernail to slide it down. If my hand was slippery or wet, I don't know how I would be able to slide it the way it instructs. Maybe it will get loose over time, or I have one that is tighter than normal. The second complaint is more of a result of the compact size (smaller than even my T100). I like taking self shots with friends by holding the camera out with my left hand. The camera button is much smaller (due to the camera size) than my T100, but also, the optic zoom is a rocker that is mounted on the corner, so it makes it difficult to take self pictures as easily without touching the zoom. For Movie mode, it would be nice if there was some small indicator on the front of the camera that it was filming. Overall, love this camera...

This is a great camera. The only thing I would change is the touch screen, it works but when you are trying to scroll through the photos it will zoom in instead of scroll, it's kind of annoying. The 16:9 shots are only at 7 mp at the max setting but they still look good. Panorama mode is really cool. The ease of switching between recording video and taking still images is very convenient and fast. It's extremely compact for what it does. If you are thinking about buying a camera, I think you will be happy with the tx7. Another thing that annoyed me was that the dock for the camera didn't come with a power cable. The power cable runs $40. The dock does have hdmi out, so you can watch video and look at pictures on the hdtv via the dock, unless you have a tv that has a sdhc or other type of memory card slot. I love this camera, but the price is a little steep, especially since I now have to buy a power cable for the dock. The dock itself doesn't charge the battery which is also annoying. A great camera overrall, you won't be disappointed, you'll just be broke after buying everything you need for it.
