kensington.com/Funny thing is, I decided to look into this trackball after reading someone saying "I don't know why these things are so popular, I hate them!" Well, I can't speak for everybody else, but I'd say this is my favorite trackball I've ever used! I've got problems with carpal tunnel syndrome that make using normal mice uncomfortable, ergonomic trackballs are better, but because of all the finger or thumb articulation those require, they eventually cause wrist pain as well. For a while, the Orbit was my favorite, cause I could just hover my hand over it and only needed to lazily tap my thumb on the button to click. All I was missing at that point was the third mouse button.
That's when I found this one, and now I don't think I'm buying any other kind of mouse ever again.
First of all, it's huge. I don't think I really appreciated how big a 55mm ball would be till I had it in my hand, but it doesn't leave much room in your palm. Pretty heavy too. I think I prefer that, cause it makes it easier to make smaller, more precise movements.
The motion is nice and smooth, and I feel like it gets gunked up a lot less quickly than other trackballs I've used. And, of course the buttons are easy to hit. Clicking and dragging with the 3rd mouse button (top left by default) like I sometimes do in Blender is a little awkward, cause you kind of have to hold your index finger on it and use your palm to move the ball, but you get used to it. The scroll wheel itself also takes a bit of getting used to; you kind of have to use the tip of one finger to move it comfortably, and I can see how someone with larger fingers might have trouble not hitting the ball while they do it.
Build quality is real good. Like I said, it's hefty and weighty, so it's not gonna drift on you, and after a few months of use, none of the buttons have developed that double-click problem my Orbit has. The only design choice I don't like is that the ball isn't secured in the slot. If you tilt the mouse over, it will fall right out. If it's just sitting at your workstation, that shouldn't be a problem, but it's something to keep in mind while you're moving it, or if you use a lap desk. I've dropped it a couple of times, and while the ball has never dented or cracked, I'd prefer not to test its limits. If you plan on taking it anywhere, you might want to go ahead and buy a case for it.
But, despite those issues, I give it five stars, cause, for me, they are easy to work around. Overall, I still love it and seriously don't want to use anything else. Control for most normal tasks is effortless and I've had absolutely no wrist pain! Kensington, as long as you never stop making these, I will never stop buying them!
